Odor Dispersion Modeling

One value we bring to customers is an analysis of stack air emissions of the common compounds that can be removed with a wet air scrubber. We measure for the compounds with Gastec on-site, hand-held equipment that has an accuracy rate up to 95%.

This information is used for input to a gaussian air dispersion math model.  An overlay map of the facility and surrounding area is used to show an estimate of how far the plant odors can be expected to travel after leaving the stack.  Models can be generated with different weather conditions.  The model will give the operator an approximation of what level ppm per compound can be tolerated in the stack.  Below is an example of the output.

For a list of compounds and their thresholds that are commonly found in rendering emissions, click here.

Depending on where the plant is located and the compound, a ppm concentration in the stack air emission could be tolerated as high as 50-100 ppm and still dissipate before it becomes a nuisance to neighbors.

In other cases it may need to be as low as less than one ppm. Equipment and conditions factor in, along with the compounds being tested, as to whether or not emissions can be moved low enough for complete dispersion.

Odor dispersion modeling is a service we can provide to Hydro Solutions customers as part of our standard service.
