Exposure Limits

  Inhalation Hazards

Caution:

Using oxidizers while conducting an odor panel, or “nose” testing the air stream, can be hazardous to your health. The following oxidizing chemicals are included. Information is as of December 2006:

Compound                             Odor Threshold                    OSHA STEL              Chlorine Dioxide                             .1 ppm                                    .3 ppm

            Chlorine                                        .03 ppm                                     1 ppm

            Ozone                                             .1 ppm                                    .3 ppm

Hydrogen Peroxide                               ?                                        1 ppm PEL

Use caution when smelling the sniff tube or air that has come from the stack if the air is being treated with an oxidizer.  More information is available under OSHA Guidelines. Gastec type tubes are available for safely testing for these compounds in the air to insure personnel are not exceeding the OSHA safety limit.

If the OSHA limit is below or equal to the odor threshold, being able to smell the oxidizer may mean you are exceeding OSHA guidelines for worker safety. The above odor thresholds are believed to be the low. Individuals may not detect the hazard down to this level due to individual differences in ablility to smell or because of damage done to the mucus membranes from exposure to the oxidizer.  Some compounds become undetectable to the human nose after an initial exposure.  Inability to detect the hazard may increase your risk to injury.
